The Impact of Agile Methodologies on Public Institutions: a case study

What happens with products, processes and people in institutionalized, constrained public systems with limited diversity and flexibility when agile is introduced? Is it possible for public institutions to assess their paradigms and structures against client-driven values, and become more responsive to changes in society in motion but also in their competitive environment?

A case study of three recent projects will be presented: 1. agile strategic planning at the ministerial level, 2. agile international project implementation with more than 15 public institutions, 3. agile teaching at the university level. The outcomes of the three projects are presented in detail, assessed for impact and risks, and discussed in the context of the applicability of the suggested methodologies for other groups and settings.

Kaizen diary of a Scrum Master

Kaizen – Japanese business philosophy of continuous improvement of business processes within a company, is deeply embedded in methods and techniques of agile and lean software development. In Scrum it is most evident at sprint retrospective meetings when the team is trying to improve the process and product based on the experience from the previous sprints.

This presentation is intended for all participants who want to hear a subjective story on retrospectives, based on development of the actual product during six two-week sprints. This is a story of the “frontline” Scrum Master:

Process or technical improvements? Small or big improvements? What are the improvements during the sprint?

Put helmets on your heads and jump into the trenches for a real Kaizen experience!

(RESOLVING THE) EFFICIENCY PARADOX

Niklas Modig, this year’s guest at QED, in his book “This is Lean” deals with situations he describes as “Efficiency Paradox.” The paradox lies in realization that highly utilized resources are not necessarily efficient. How to achieve the ideal balance (this is lean!) between resource utilization and efficiency flow? What is the impact of variability in the production on this balance?

At QED, Niklas will give us the answers to these and many other questions at his workshop.

Although our QED conference deals primarily with IT (i.e. software development), this theme is universal and interesting for all industries. If we talk about software, replace the word “resources” with “people” and “variability” with “project size” … and it becomes very interesting. At least it should be, for every software development manager who takes care of himself.

Finally, read a review of the Niklas’s book: http://better-operations.com/2013/06/30/this-is-lean

DevOps, Maximizing Results – a look at concepts and best practices

The term DevOps has become a popular term dating back to 2009 to describe the intersection and hand-off between development and operations. The term is relatively new, but the concepts that make up DevOps have been around much longer. Over the years Avnet has been engaged with multiple large organizations helping them optimize their software development life-cycle.

Scott Bybee will in his presentation explain DevOps including common conventions, organizational changes, best practices, common pitfalls and various tools available to support achieving more agility in an organization’s release management processes. Scott will also present some real examples from various customers across Europe.

Niklas Modig at QED 2014!

Niklas Modig, one of the world’s leading speakers in the field of lean management, will hold two workshops at QED – ”This is lean” and ”Lean on myself”. He will hold the workshop ”This is lean” individually, while the workshop ”Lean on myself” Niklas will hold together with his colleague Ole Haslestad.

This is lean – Niklas Modig

Lean is the most spread management concept in the world. It is applied within all types of functions in almost every industry. However, recent research shows that there is much more to learn. In his presentation, Niklas will give us a deeper understanding of what efficiency and excellence really are. By decoding Toyota’s philosophy and way of work, Niklas has come up with different insights he will share with us in order to help us improve our efficiency and take it to the next level.

Lean On Myself – Ole Haslestad and Niklas Modig

The trend of applying the lean concept into our everyday lives is increasing. Is it possible to increase personal efficiency by applying lean thinking into work-life balance? On this presentation, you will learn how to manage your personal development in a better and more structured way. ‘’Lean On Myself’’ combines the latest research findings on operational excellence and systemic health.
